Travel Workers: How to Make the Best of Your Home Time

If you have to travel from location to location on a regular basis, you might want to rethink how you use your home time.  Temporary jobs or traveling for business usually come with some sort of corporate housing solution.  These are often unfamiliar places if you travel all over which makes it difficult to spend your home time well. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to make the best of the time that you spend at home.

Floor Workouts

Working out isn’t for everyone!  But we all need to move.  We have to take time out of our day in order to work out muscles, stretch out kinks, and get joints working again.  Days at a desk or in stressful situations can often relate to a lot of body pain.

There are several kinds of workouts that you can enjoy from your current home:

  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • HITT
  • Tabata
  • Body Weight
  • Exercise Bands

Each type of exercise offers different benefits for everyone in any physical state.  Most exercises can be easily modified to fit your situation and your space: sometimes, investing in resistance equipment might help amp up your workout. 

Otherwise, stick to the low impact exercises from yoga, pilates, and body weight workouts.  These practices lengthen muscles and help develop strength over a period of time.

Reading and Virtual Book Clubs

Reading is a great way to disengage from the work day and dive into an unknown, or known world.  Reading works much in the same way as zoning out on your phone: your mind can separate from the stresses of the day and decompress.

Sometimes, reading may not be your thing.  How about audio books or book clubs? If you want to increase the amount of reading that you do in a year, then it is a great idea to not only purchase books, but also listen to them at times.  There are even podcasts that record books too!

If you want the extra encouragement of book club, there are several that can be found on Craigslist, MeetUp, Facebook, and other social sites.

Working on a Hobby

This world is full of endless hobbies!  This can be dangerous for those obsessed with doing things, but it can also lead to a lot of fun adventures.  With hobbies, walk into your nearest craft store and see what sticks out to you.

If you already have a hobby, then set aside time to work on or practice this hobby every day.  Working on what you love adds to enjoying your time and developing a sense of accomplishment.  This is going to help you feel more connected to your space and also check that wise time box.

Self-Betterment

Self-betterment is about focusing on yourself and not forcing what you have learned on other people.  Some would call this a spiritual journey, or a focus on the inward self.  Self-betterment practices are a great way to spend your time.

Have you tried meditation? If your job is stressful and full of constant activity, your brain is probably numb, emotions are dead, and sleep is a second away.  Meditation helps relax the mind and body while also engaging with the emotions of the day.

Self-Care

Something that people forget about with self-care is the amount of time that it can take.  With self-care you have to remember to spend at least 5 minutes a day taking care of just yourself and your own mind.  Otherwise, you will lose your marbles.

Whether you have the ability to designate an hour or only five minutes, take that time for yourself.  It is very important.  Don’t hesitate to begin setting aside more time to take care of your skin, mental health, injuries, and more.  

One thing that we often forget is how important our feet are.  A great way to start working on your self-care is to freeze a water bottle in the morning.  When you get home, grab the water bottle and a towel, plop down on your favorite chair, and roll out your feet with the water bottle!

This helps decrease the inflammation of a long day and it will also help you regulate your temperature if you are a warm bodied person.  If cold hurts, then use a water bottle with warm water or tepid water.  Make sure that the water bottle is sturdy enough to handle the stress from your day!
